iPad Workshop: Math Activities with the iPad (Paul Irwin)
Date: 4/30/12 Time: 3:30 pm – 5:30pm
Where: Angel Oak Elementary
Description: Are you looking for ideas for incorporating the ipad into the math activities in your classroom? The ipad is a great tool to motivate students and get them engaged in math activities. This workshop will demonstrate math activities your students can do with ipads along with many apps you can use with your students. You will walk away from this workshop with activities you can incorporate in your classroom tomorrow!
Uses for math activities with ipads: Your students can use ipads for a variety of math activities including: multiplication, geometry, data and graphs, fractions, and much more!
Materials needed for workshop:
  • Teacher iPad2
  • Free Apps: Doodle Buddy
  • Paid Apps: Whiteboard, StripDesign, Notability, Splashmath, Strip Design
  • internet

Workshop Activities:
    1. SplashMath – This app covers many of our math standards. The app is available for many elementary grade levels (2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc.). Let's take a look!
      Uses include:
      1. Varied math activies - by grade level
      2. Monitor student progress
      3. Email results to parents and teacher
    2. StripDesign and iPad Camera – Use this app to allow students to document hands-on math activities and then create a project demonstrating the concept. Example: Transformations activity. Check out the tutorial!

    3. Built-in manipulatives – No need to dig your manipulatives out of the cabinet. The ipad has hands-on activities built in: Tangrams, dice, fraction strips, counters, clocks, money, and base 10 blocks. (Apps: Tangrams, Dice, Virtual Manipulatives, SkipCounting, TellingTimeHD, BaseTenBlocks, JungleCoins, MakeChange)
      Go to your apps store and find these above. Try each one!

    4. PDF annotator for math activities – no paper needed! Post math activities in PDF format on a class wiki, students download using PDF annotator and complete. We will go to my wiki and open a PDF in Notability to complete
